Renowned Archaeologist Hawass Receives Spanish Award for ‘Man of the Year’

In a prestigious ceremony held today in Cairo, the Spanish Union of Writers and Journalists bestowed upon Zahi Hawass, Egypt’s renowned archaeologist, the prestigious Man of the Year award for 2024. A delegation of 45 Spanish journalists and writers, led by Union President Mariano Palacin, attended the event to honor Hawass’s achievements.

Meeting Hawass in person was a dream come true,” stated Palacin. “He is truly the pharaoh who has elevated Egyptology to international acclaim. We eagerly await from him the discovery of the century: the anticipated unveiling of Nefertiti’s tomb.”

In response, Zahi Hawass outlined his most significant past discoveries and ongoing research endeavors. He highlighted the discovery of the lost Golden City in Luxor, which ranked as the world’s top archaeological discovery of 2021 according to Archaeology Magazine. This city, founded by the Egyptian king Amenhotep III and flourishing during the reign of the young Tutankhamun, has captured global attention for its historical significance.

Hawass also unveiled ongoing work following the discovery of a 9-meter-long corridor within the Great Pyramid of Cheops, leading to the burial chamber. Describing this discovery as “the most important of the 21st century in the Giza pyramid complex,” he revealed that the mission is set to conclude in July.

Furthermore, Hawass discussed excavation efforts in the tomb of King Ramses II, where a 9-meter-deep shaft has been unearthed. He highlighted the uniqueness of this find, noting that it features three inscriptions in each corner related to the afterlife, suggesting a religious function for the shaft.

“We are currently searching for Queen Nefertiti’s tomb in Luxor and the pyramid of King Honi in Saqqara,” concluded Hawass. These ongoing endeavors underscore Egypt’s rich archaeological heritage and the continuous quest to unlock its ancient mysteries.

Zahi Hawass’s tireless dedication to Egyptology has not only unearthed remarkable treasures but also shed light on the rich history of ancient Egypt. His passion for preserving and promoting Egypt’s cultural legacy has earned him international acclaim and recognition. As he continues to lead groundbreaking archaeological expeditions, the world eagerly awaits the next remarkable discovery that will further enrich our understanding of Egypt’s illustrious past.
