Supporting Indigenous Languages: Filac’s Pledge to Preserve Latin America’s Cultural Diversity

Proposed Support for the 500 Indigenous Languages of Latin America: The 17th General Assembly of the Fund for the Development of Indigenous Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean (Filac) recently concluded in Caracas with a momentous decision to champion the preservation and revitalization of the 500 indigenous languages still in use across the region. Delegates from over 60 delegations representing indigenous communities and governments from 22 nations gathered from 27 to 29 May, endorsing a resolution that underscores their dedication to upholding the linguistic and cultural richness of Latin America.

In a press release issued following the assembly, Filac reiterated its commitment to the full implementation of the Ibero-American Action Plan aimed at safeguarding the rights of indigenous peoples. The participants emphasized the significance of nurturing intercultural dialogue and promoting the self-determination of indigenous communities as essential components of sustainable development.

A key highlight of the gathering was the unanimous call for member states to establish national dialogue mechanisms in partnership with indigenous groups, emphasizing mutual collaboration and co-creation of policies that reflect the diverse needs and perspectives of indigenous populations. This collaborative approach aims to bridge existing gaps within the broader framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, incorporating specific indicators and targets tailored to address the unique challenges faced by indigenous communities.

Furthermore, government officials and indigenous leaders voiced unequivocal support for the upcoming United Nations Future Summit scheduled for 22nd and 23rd September 2024. The summit aims to address critical gaps within the existing sustainable development agenda by proposing innovative solutions and forging new intergovernmental agreements that center on building a cohesive global framework inclusive of indigenous peoples. This collective endeavor seeks to establish a social compact that not only anticipates future challenges, risks, and opportunities but also ensures equitable participation and representation of indigenous voices in shaping the global trajectory.

As the world looks towards a future fraught with uncertainties and complexities, the resolute stance taken by Filac and its member states signifies a renewed commitment to uphold the rights, languages, and cultural heritage of indigenous communities in Latin America. By fostering dialogue, collaboration, and inclusivity, stakeholders across the region are forging a path towards a more just, equitable, and sustainable future for all.
